Transgender St. Pauli Resident Julia Böhmer

Much has been written about St. Pauli. Yet there is still much left to be said.

There are ‘silent chapters’ in the neighbourhood’s history that have not (yet) been told – such as that of the transgender St. Pauli resident Julia Böhmer (1938–2023).

She experienced the neighbourhood from the 1950s to the 2020s and was one of the last eyewitnesses who could – and wanted to – recount the queer scene in St. Pauli at that time.

The exhibition sheds light on around 70 years of the neighbourhood’s history from a queer – or, more precisely, a transgender – perspective. The central thread is the life story of Julia Böhmer.

This exhibition is dedicated to her, her friends and queer people then and now, here and everywhere – it is intended for everyo“Mutti hat etwas geahnt“. Kindheit und Jugend 1938-57.
